4WD Adventure to Penang Hill

Tuesday, 9 March, 2010

Try to escape the heat of tropical Georgetown.  Why not visit Penang Hill, also known as Bukit Bendera.  It  is 830 meter high (2,750 foot) and it’s much cooler than in the city below.

Took my staff up to Penang Hill for some project survey & we certainly have a trilling ride to Penang Hill via Hotel bellevue’s 4WDs.  The uphill ride takes around 15 minutes. Ride is truly pleasant. Certain stretch of the road is steep but pose no problem to the experienced driver and the mighty Pajero.

Here’s some shot of the journey using slow shutter speed.  Penang Hill is so blessed with rich flora & fauna.  Let’s cherish nature.

Penang Jubilee Clock Tower…

Tuesday, 22 September, 2009

The moorish-style clocktower at the junction of Lebuh Light and Lebuh Pantai is sixty feet tall, one foot for each year of Victoria’s reign. A corner of the wall surrounding Fort Cornwallis appears behind the tower, which was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 1897 Jubilee.

The 60 feet high clock tower is divided into four tiers. The first tier is octagonal, followed by square base. Second and third tiers and finishes by arched and domed cupola. Moorish design elements such as the dome and arches, the balconies on the second tier with horse shoe arched openings, battlemented parapet of the first tier and etc. were used in the design. The clock placed on the third tier. From a far the clock tower look more like a minaret of a mosque.

Visit to BOH Tea Plantation @ Cameron Highlands

Saturday, 14 June, 2008

More than 5000ft above sea level, on the main mountain range of Malaysia, is one of the most fertile agricultural spots in the country: Cameron Highlands.

Nicknamed ‘Malaysia’s Green Bowl’, the highlands possess all the right attributes of prime cropland – moderate temperatures, high altitude, abundant rainfall, long hours of sunshine and well-drained soil.

BOH Tea Plantation is a must-visit place when you are in Cameron Highlands… Scenic , tranquil & cool fresh air ! The road journey to the BOH Tea Plantation is quite an adventure itself. Road is narrow and winding. Do give a honk or two while negotiating a corner to let oncoming traffic know there is a car coming. Gets kind of fun to honk the horn after a while!

Put narrow roads aside, the view of green rolling hills, with the neat regular rows of tea plants, is truely breathtaking & refreshing ! Many a times, you may want to stop your car, and just walk in the tea plantation and pick some tea leafs yourself!

The Sg Palas ‘ummph!’ BOH TEA Plantation offers a FREE guided factory tour of how the tea leaf is processed. Don’t forget to visit a very nice BOH TEA SHOP nearby & pamper yourself with a nice cup of tea, cakes & enjoy the enchanting ambience & view of the BOH TEA Plantation !

Khoo Kongsi @ Penang

Saturday, 3 May, 2008

Khoo Konsi at night

Khoo Kongsi for short, is one of the most distinctive Chinese clan associations in Malaysia. It is well known worldwide for its extensive lineage that can be traced back 650 years, as well as its closely-knit and defensive congregation of buildings and a magnificent clanhouse.

Surprisingly, famous as it is, its location appears to be unknown to many Penangites. It is situated at the southwest of Georgetown, and its pivotal building, Leong San Tong, is hidden amidst the crowded gridiron of terrace houses and shophouses. To make it to Leong San Tong, which is perhaps the most majestic clanhouse in South East Asia, you will need to tread through an alley between two rows of 19th century terrace houses and bypass the opera stage, before you see it stand majestically on the granite square.

Khoo Kongsi, together with Cheah, Yeoh, Lim and Tan Kongsi, were known as the Five Big Clans (Goh Tai Seh) that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in early Penang. Since mid-19th century, having identified their respective bases, these kongsi rooted themselves in an area stretching from Chulia Street Ghaut in Georgetown to the lower part of Beach Street in the south. With the respective clanhouses as the nuclei, these kongsi demarcated their territories with their own terrace houses on three or four sides of the perimeters. This adjoining, closely-knit and defensive model settlement, like a clan village in the colonial city, is a rare form of congregation practised among migrant communities.

Khoo Kongsi has outstanding structure, mature and elegantly proportionate in terms of form. It depicts excellent craftsmanship in woodcarving, stone carving, coloured drawing, stucco sculpture, cut-and-paste decoration and tiled roof work of master craftsmen from Southern Fujian at the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is indeed the grandest masterpiece of its type in South East Asia.

A must visit place ! Highly recommended !
